St. Christina is holding the arrows of her martyrdom in her left hand and the sacred host and corporal (eucharistic miracle) in her right hand. At the base is the millstone that was tied around her neck to sink/drown her and the venomous viper that was thrown into her cell. The statue also has a beaded halo, necklace/crucifix, beaded headdress, jeweled belt, palm frond, yellow satin fabric/forest green velvet fabric veil and cloak with brown and gold trim, fancy painted colorful details, etc.



Despite the fantastic stories surrounding St. Christina and her martyrdom, there is evidence that a Christian witness named Christina, a young girl, died a martyr and was honored for her faith.

Legend describes her as a young girl of a wealthy Roman family living in Bolsena, Italy. She had great beauty and many suitors came calling for her hand in marriage, but her father intended for her to become a pagan priestess. He set up a special room for her that was decorated with gold and silver images of pagan gods and instructed her to offer prayer and incense to them.

When she was visited by an angel, she became Christian. She went through the family’s house breaking up the golden and silver images of pagan gods and selling the pieces to help the poor. Her father became enraged, and threw her into a nearby lake with a stone tied around her neck. She somehow survived the incident, and was brought before authorities, who ordered her killed with arrows. Other torments were assigned to her, including bites from poisonous snakes/vipers and burning in a furnace.


The Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena occurred in 1263 when a consecrated host began to bleed onto a linen altar cloth during Mass at the Basilica of St. Christina in Bolsena, Italy.


Key Details of the Miracle:

The Priest: Peter of Prague, a German or Bohemian priest, struggled with doubts about the doctrine of transubstantiation (the belief that bread and wine become the actual body and blood of Christ).

The Event: While celebrating Mass over the tomb of St. Christina, blood began to seep from the consecrated host and fell onto his hands and the corporal (the altar linen cloth).

The Investigation: A shaken Peter of Prague took the bleeding host and linen to Pope Urban IV, who was staying nearby in Orvieto. After an official investigation, the Pope declared the event a true miracle.

Historical Impact:

Feast of Corpus Christi: In 1264, Pope Urban IV instituted the universal Feast of Corpus Christi to honor the Blessed Sacrament, inspired in part by this miracle.

St. Thomas Aquinas: The Pope commissioned St. Thomas Aquinas to compose the liturgical texts, hymns, and Mass prayers for the new feast day.

Current Location: The blood-stained Corporal of Bolsena is preserved in a golden reliquary inside the Cathedral of Orvieto (Duomo di Orvieto) in Italy.
